The Role of a Car Accident Witness: Important Steps to Take
July 2, 2015 @ 9:23 pm
Chances are that most people will witness a car accident at some point in their lives. This can be a scary experience, but you must keep your wits about you. As a witness, you play a very important role.
Stay Calm and Assess the Situation
Whether the accident is minor or severe, the first step is to dial 911 and alert the authorities. Remind yourself not to panic. You need to stay calm to ensure you can speak to the operator and follow instructions. Immediately following an accident, the situation will likely be very unstable. There will possibly be cars in the road, combustible substances leaking or people with injuries who need help. It’s easy to get scared and act without thinking, but if you do, you could put yourself or others in danger. Don’t attempt to approach the vehicles until you’re sure the situation is safe.
Avoid Moving the Injured
If you find someone with an injury, your first instinct will probably be to get him or her out of the car. However, this is something you should avoid whenever possible. After an accident, a victim is often in shock, and even if he or she doesn’t seem to be in severe pain, it’s possible that there could be serious internal injuries neither of you are aware of. If you try to move this person, those injuries could worsen. The person should only be moved if in imminent danger.
Help Out Later if Needed
When you speak to the police, be sure to leave the officer with your contact information. You may later receive a phone call from an officer, insurance agent or personal injury attorney. If you do, simply be honest about what you witnessed that day. If you took pictures or video on the scene, you may be required to hand them over later, so it’s important to make sure you keep them saved.
Learn From the Mistakes of Others
Witnessing an accident is an important reminder of just how dangerous driving can be. Long-time drivers tend to get into a groove and fall under the illusion that they are safe in the car, but this type of complacency can be dangerous. Keep the accident in mind as you drive in the following weeks, months and years. It might help you stay a little more alert and avoid a dangerous accident of your own.
